India have retained their number one spot in the test rankings on the back of a formidable home record, but Kohli reckons his team have the opportunity to improve further during trips to South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand over the next 18 months.
India have not won a series in South Africa and talking about India's chances the skipper said, "I have no doubt in the ability of the team". Following a close fight in the first Test, the team lead by M.S. Dhoni failed miserably in the second as the home team sewed up the series.
"We toured Australia, three years ago and did a pretty good job".
"These boys have been on on the road together for the last 4-5 years - the same team". We have done well in England.
Shastri believes that this side has been together for a few years now and that is one aspect which will help them thrive in South Africa. In 2015 Sri Lanka had some great tracks especially in the last two Tests where the ball seamed and swung. The chief coach also urged the players to embrace the challenges with aplomb and insisted that the team's preparation has been good. "The nucleus has been the same so that should help a long way", the former all-rounder added.
"Playing for the country is the most important".
Any place, even Indian conditions can be very hard if you are not in a good frame of mind, so cricket is played with ball and bat and if you are not there mentally, it does not matter the conditions you are playing in. We nearly won the Test in Jo'burg (Johannesburg), it was a close game, we lost in Durban, but we played some really good Test cricket.
