Mr. Lipson is one of more than 100 faculty at the University of Chicago who signed a public letter asking Mr. Obama to move his library. Some of the brilliance of Frederick Olmsted's plan for Jackson Park is dormant on on a gray January day, but spring may reveal more about what future visitors will see in the park.
The letter closes with a blistering criticism of the project's estimated cost, which the professors argue will easily exceed $100 million and fall exclusively on the shoulders of the taxpayer.
Rather than "fix" each of these problems piece by piece, the Obama Foundation should recognize that the choice of Jackson Park as its site is so badly flawed that it needs to reconsider placement of the center.
Leonardo DiCaprio Is Re-Teaming With Quentin Tarantino
Whatever the content of it is, it's recently kicked off an almighty bidding war amongst studios - unsurprisingly. The project will be DiCaprio's first film since winning the Oscar for " The Revenant ".
The letter also states that the center will cost Chicago taxpayers "hundreds of millions of dollars". Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel served as Obama's first chief of staff in the White House.
The foundation, however, announced Monday that it has opted to drop the plans for an above-ground garage in favor of an underground parking lot, according to the Associated Press. "The economic impact to the people who live there now would be incredible". "Take a look at that, at that initial decision where they decided between Jackson Park and Washington Park". "We've reimagined the landscape plans and the recreational spaces".
The Obama Library South Side Community Benefits Agreement Coalition says "low-income, working-, and middle-class communities" will be "directly impacted by the development of the Obama Presidential Center". Obama Presidential Center is "socially regressive".
The coalition wants the Obama Foundation to provide job-training programs for local residents, support minority-owned business development, improvements to neighborhood schools and affordable housing and property tax relief for longtime residents.
