San Francisco police are searching for Aldon Smith after the defensive end left a scene Saturday in which a woman accused him of domestic violence. The victim suffered injuries that are not considered life threatening.
Smith's fiancee spoke with TMZ and confirmed that she called police to report Smith had assaulted her on Saturday night, but she said she is mostly anxious about Smith getting help for his substance abuse problem.
Smith has not played in the National Football League since 2015 but is on the Raiders' reserve/suspended list.
The Raiders kept it brief with their announcement: "The Oakland Raiders have released LB Aldon Smith".
AFC West notes: Kirk Cousins to the Denver Broncos?
Smith is an experienced quarterback who's just come off one of the best seasons of his career. The 2018 NFL Draft is less than two months away and the NFL Scouting Combine is underway.
On Monday, TMZ attributed his fiancee, Shawna McKnight, when reporting that Smith reached out to the victim's parents, who facilitated his entrance into a rehabilitation facility.
Aldon Smith needs help. Police said several shots were fired, two partygoers were injured, and Smith was stabbed. And I'm scared for his life with his addiction.
Smith was the seventh overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Missouri.
He signed with Oakland just before the start of the 2015 season and had 3½ sacks in nine games before being suspended again for at least one year.
And in 2013, Smith turned himself in on three felony counts for possessing illegal assault weapons after a stabbing incident.
