An armed student who shot two other students at Great Mills High School in Maryland has died, according to St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron Two people were critically injured in a shooting at a high school in the eastern USA state of Maryland. Officials say the 16-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at UM Prince George's Hospital Center.
School Resource Officer Deputy 1st Class Blaine Gaskill was alerted to the shooting and according to Sheriff Tim Cameron, he immediately responded and engaged Rollins.
"This is a tough guy who apparently closed in very quickly and took the right kind of action", he said.
He was later pronounced dead but its not clear whether the officer shot him or if he shot himself.
Shortly before the opening bell, the call went out for "shots fired" at Great Mills High School in Maryland. On Saturday, March 24, students will take part in the March for Our Lives in Washington, DC, to protest gun violence in America.
After the Parkland shooting, Hogan proposed spending $125 million to enhance school security, including panic buttons and metal detectors, and vowed to provide an additional $50 million to hire school resource officers and counselors.
"He had to cover significant ground", Cameron said. "And we need more than prayers".
"This is what you hope never happens, but this is what you prepare for", Cameron said.
Martin faces charges for Instagram post
In 2013, Martin, while playing for the Dolphins, claimed he was bullied by teammates and eventually left the team. Harvard-Westlake subsequently closed for the day on February 23 as a precaution.
Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman David Fitz says the agents are there to assist the local sheriff's office and he had no immediate information about injuries or fatalities at Great Mills High School.
"It sure sounds like this is exactly the way that it should have been handled", Governor Hogan said. She tweeted: "The police came to my classroom and saw us to the bathroom and back and said we would be leaving soon".
Eventually, the students were escorted outside and taken to another school to be reunited with their parents.
Investigators say the shooter used a glock semi-automatic handgun.
Cameron said despite the quick response of the school resource officer attached to the school, two students were still shot. Teachers' union leaders issued statements Tuesday saying more policies must be changed nationwide to keep schools safe.
Several people were shot at a Maryland high school on Tuesday, local news media reported, after school officials confirmed the campus was on lockdown and the incident had been "contained". These are children, as Dr. Smith (St. Mary's County Schools Superintendent) said. Gun control advocates, however, have urged for a ban on semiautomatic rifles, stricter background checks and other measures to limit ease of access to weapons.
Hoyer recalled last week's National School Walkout, and mentioned that he was particularly struck by the "searing" comment of Matthew Post, the student member of the Montgomery County School Board.
Each jurisdiction throughout the state individually trains officers, with some coming from local police departments and others from county sheriff's offices.
