"This is the first approval of a USA -licensed satellite constellation to provide broadband services using a new generation of low-Earth orbit satellite technologies", the Federal Communications Commission said in a statement.
"Today, this is our fifth launch for the Iridium constellation, using only three rockets", SpaceX materials engineer Michael Hammersley said during live commentary.
The first stage booster for today's launch was previously flown during Iridium-3 in October 2017, making this the second Iridium NEXT launch to use a flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket.
The Iridium project, though less flamboyant, will replace the world's largest commercial satellite network of low-Earth orbit satellites in one of the largest "tech upgrades" in history, Iridium has said.
This launch marks the fifth set of satellites to be sent into space for the global communications company Iridium.
Today's planned launch is the first of two planned by SpaceX in the next four days.
Wichita honors veterans on Vietnam War Veterans Day
Veterans Administration says approximately 2.7 million American servicemen and servicewomen represented their nation in Vietnam. Veterans arrive at Camp Pendleton March 29, 2018 to witness the delivery of a new Vietnam War Memorial.
SpaceX was chosen to launch a constellation of 75 satellites in eight missions.
The satellites are expected to be deployed into low-Earth orbit about an hour after liftoff. The operator also said its satellite network, used to provide voice and data connectivity for governments, vehicles and other end users, passed 1 million active subscribers just prior to Friday's launch. "The process of replacing the satellites one-by-one in a constellation of this size and scale has never been completed before".
Falcon 9 fairings have thrusters that can guide it using Global Positioning System back toward a target then use parafoils - a type of parachute that works in high altitudes - to slow it down and have it land on nets held open by a ship with a "giant mitt" called Mr Steven.
Continuing with their launch mission, another Falcon 9 launch is scheduled to take place on April 2.
However, unlike a Falcon 9 first stage that has a dedicated engine that lands it on a drone ship or a landing pad, the fairing does not have engines that can direct it toward a target.
SpaceX's February 22 launch debuted Mr Steven, but that fairing also missed the boat, although the parafoil made sure it had a soft landing in the water. Musk said helicopter drop tests would be conducted over the next few weeks to solve the issue.
