It's been a whirlwind 24 hours for the MMA community since the main event of UFC 223 fell apart after interim-lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was pulled from the card due to injury, but to Max Holloway, it's just business as usual.
The fourth time wasn't the charm for Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson, but Max Holloway isn't your typical replacement option. This will also give Holloway the chance to become the only other fighter besides Conor McGregor to hold two belts simultaneously.
White spoke to ESPN Sunday night and said McGregor wasn't considered to fill in for Ferguson. Nurmagomedov said. "I need eight weeks, train hard, last one week make weight and go to the war".
'And Conor is not the guy I want to throw in as a late replacement fighter.
"I think that Conor could return in September and it could be against one of these guys", White said. Holloway had to pull out of his scheduled title fight against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 (which took place on March 3), but now he will step in just over a month later to stick to his word, and replace Tony Ferguson.
Russian spy: Source of nerve agent 'not identified'
France expelled four Russian diplomats last week over the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal . The Trump administration expelled 60 Russians from the USA alone.
Holloway will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title in the main event at Barclays Center.
He posted: "For the record, Dana called me yesterday to see if I would step in against Khabib since Max hadn't responded yet".
'Happy Easter to everyone out there, I believe there is a silver lining in this nightmare of a reality because this isn't an April Fools'. At least, it was enough time if his tweet about "staying ready" was in reference to the lightweight title fight.
The UFC didn't disclose the nature of Ferguson's injury. "I'm heavier than I've ever been because I haven't fought in a long time". "He's a fighter's champion". Lack of training camp aside, it will be interesting to see how Holloway's injury holds up against Khabib.
Most recently, the French Canadian won the middleweight title at UFC 217 in November with a third-round submission win over then-champion Michael Bisping. "They just did that with Robert Whittaker past year".
