To rally advertisers to boycott Sinclair stations is a much more hard endeavor.
Sinclair wrote promos for its network of local broadcasters.
According to CNN, a Sinclair news station director sent this email to his newsroom: "Let me be absolutely clear here".
KMPH (which is owned by Sinclair) last month deferred comment on the campaign to Scott Livingston, Sinclair's senior vice president of news, who called reports "an attempt to create a story where none exist". Its largest stations by market size are in Washington, DC, where it runs the ABC affiliate WJLA, and Seattle, where it owns two ABC affiliates.
A person in Sinclair management confirmed that tensions are on the rise. An example of the must-runs includes the "Terrorism Alert Desk" segment, warning of potential threats to national security.
The company, which owns almost 200 stations in the US, has reportedly been forcing its affiliates to run conservative commentary segments, including those by former advisers of President Donald Trump. That's all the more insidious because people expect that kind of contortionist support for Trump when they tune in to something like Fox News, but probably have some assumption of objectivity from their local news.
Trump tweeted that "The Fake News Networks, those that knowingly have a sick and biased AGENDA, are anxious about the competition and quality of Sinclair Broadcast".
"I was a broadcast journalist for 32 years, and I see this Sinclair move as an effort to discredit all news media except Sinclair", Gardner told the Statesman.
Other reporters at the station did record the message, it added.
For a journalist to quit and violate their contract, they allegedly must pay back the company their base pay times 40 percent, times the percentage of their contract that's left.

The Situation agreed, saying, "It took that absence of time to make us miss each other and you'll see that". Believe it or not, the OG BFF's of the shore, Snooki and JWoww , are both married with children.
The employees said they felt they needed to speak anonymously because they were anxious they could lose their jobs if identified.
Ultimately, how can a press remain free and objective when those who are put in control of it are most interested in profit and advancing a political agenda? It is unclear if any stations have refused to broadcast them.
Livingston told The New York Times past year that they "work very hard to be objective and fair and be in the middle".
SBG is the corporate abbreviation for Sinclair.
Even allies of Trump admit the tweet praising Sinclair was a bad idea.
In his memo to stations, Livingston described a "Trust and Truth research" project the company did involving a well-known consulting firm called Magid.
Many consumers want only news that confirms what they want to believe.
However, this message seemed to have the opposite effect of the message the anchors were trying to convey.
But some outsiders see it as irresponsible. "This is extremely risky to a democracy", the anchors read in the video.
Sinclair defended the "false news" promo. A mash-up of all of the anchors reciting the same wording has become viral and sparked national debate about news legitimacy and propaganda.
And Pew data shows that while local news viewership is falling, local stations' audience is still comparable to that of network news and significantly higher than that of cable news. They pointed out that station Facebook pages and Twitter feeds are receiving criticism about the promos. "At my station, everyone was uncomfortable doing it", one anchor told CNN.
It was a fairly typical Trump tweet - and exactly the kind of message that critics hear echoed in Sinclair's mandatory anchor scripts.
