It happened shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 18 in Lakeview.
The bus was driving eastbound on the Southern State Parkway in Lakeview when it crashed into the overpass.
Troy D. Gaston, 43, of Bethlehem was behind the wheel of bus carrying 38 students and five chaperones returning from a European trip, according to New York State Police. "I give credit the Nassau County police ambulance bureau's emergency services unit and the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department".
Two passengers suffered serious injuries, five others received moderate injuries and about three dozen were lightly hurt in the accident, State Police Major David Candelaria said.
Video shows teenagers sitting and standing outside of the white damaged bus, some draped in blankets, as firefighters inspect the wreckage. The bus was stopped between the right lane and the road's shoulder.
Facebook to make 'unsend' feature available in messages soon
The existing delete function in Messenger removes the message from the sender's inbox, but it remains visible for everyone else. The social network has promised to not unsend any more of Zuckerberg's messages until the feature is available for all users.
The driver told police he was unaware of commercial vehicle restrictions on the parkway.
The vehicle's operator, Journey Bus Line, of Irvington, New Jersey, could not immediately be reached for comment.
With a height of just under 8 feet, the overpass "has one of the lowest clearances of any bridge on any Long Island parkway", the Baldwin Herald reported in 2015. In 2017, there were reports that an electronic alarm system would be installed on the parkway to warn drivers of vehicles too high for the overpass. When an oversized vehicle tripped the sensor, it would trigger a warning message on a full-color LED sign display that alerts the driver of imminent bridge strikes.
The driver will be subjected to drug and alcohol tests, according to police.
"The impact to the overpass was significant", Candelaria said after Sunday's bus crash.
