But over a year later - and four years after Facebook's $3 billion purchase of virtual reality company Oculus in 2014 - we've arrived at the next F8 developer conference, and it feels like no one is using Facebook Spaces.
The CEO spent a large part of the keynote discussing Facebook Groups, which will now have their own tab front-and-center in the Facebook app. Those include how much of the company's revenue comes from Myanmar and if there was any link between the USA elections and the 2017 purge of fake accounts.
Times have changed, and Facebook is changing with them. The tool will let Facebook users not only see which sites and apps gather information about usage, but also let users delete this information.
For Zuckerberg, that's meant repeated apologies to users and lawmakers, two days of congressional questioning about whether and how the company protects its users' privacy.
Zuckerberg did spend a significant amount of time talking about Facebook's recent problems, highlighting the work that the company has been doing to combat fake news, election interference, and privacy intrusions.
The tool will let people build separate profiles just for dating using their first names only.

For instance, Facebook could use the conference to release a portable headset created to turn the so far geeky realm of virtual reality into a mass phenomenon.
Facebook also made the surprise announcement that its portable VR headset - Oculus Go - would go on sale in the USA on Tuesday, priced $199 (£146).
Unlike the Oculus Rift, a $399 VR device that must be tethered to a personal computer, the Oculus Go is portable.
Ime Archibong, Facebook's head of platform, said the process will be slightly stricter going forward.
