Twitter practice is to store passwords encrypted, or hashed, so they are masked to even people inside the company, Twitter chief technology officer Parag Agrawal explained in a blog post. Twitter recommends that all users of the network, microblogging change the password to enter the system due to a detected error in the system storage.
"Password hashing" is an industry standard, and can prevent a hacker from quickly exploiting the information if it ever leaks.

The company is presenting users with a pop-up window that includes a message about the bug and a link to their Settings page where they can change the password.
