Among individual stocks, ICICI Bank rallied on hopes of improvement in the lender's asset quality after it announced March-quarter results post market hours on Monday.
Similarly, the barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 34,983.59 points, traded at 35,018.57 points (10.20 a.m.) - up 103.19 points or 0.30 per cent - from its previous session's close of 34,915.38 points.
U.S. crude, however, topped the $75 mark for the first time since 2014. The NSE Nifty also traded above the 10,750 mark by gaining 43.05 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 10,758.55.
The Sensex has so far touched a high of 35,061.56 and a low of 34,977.74 points.
According to market analysts, heavy selling pressure in consumer durables and capital goods stocks trimmed the overall gains made earlier in the day's trade. The market breadth was negative as 1148 shares advanced, against a decline of 1489 shares, while 141 shares are unchanged. Financial stocks are the top gainers, with Bank Nifty gaining a percent, while Nifty PSU bank index up over 1.5%.

Asian shares ended mixed despite the strong closing on Wall Street as investors digested last week's trade talks and United States jobs numbers.
Other gainers were Yes Bank, Axis Bank, ITC, ONGC, Dr Reddy's, Coal India, Sun Pharma, RIL, Adani Port, SBI, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints and Power Grid, rising up to 1.73%. The Indian currency had closed at a 15-month low of 67.13 against the U.S. dollar on Monday.
Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net bought shares worth Rs 1,037.23 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold equities worth Rs 635.24 crore on Monday, provisional data showed.
