Since Hawaii's Kilauea volcano began a once-in-a-century-scale eruption on May 3, authorities have shutdown the plant, removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquid, and deactivated wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth's core.
The destruction came after rivers of lava flowed toward the ocean over the weekend, forcing officials to knock on doors and urge residents holding out in two evacuated neighborhoods to flee right away.
After weeks of scientific updates on the volcano, the U.S. Geological Survey took a lighter tone as it responded to a question on Twitter about whether it would be safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents.
"Hawaii County Civil Defense chose to evacuate all of lower Puna to ensure that people would be able to get out", Stovall said.
The civil defence agency had ordered more residents of the vulnerable Leilani Estates area to leave because of the lava.
On Wednesday, Fissure 8 fueled a river of lava that traveled nearly a half-mile in 80 minutes, according to the Civil Defense Agency. They estimated violent eruptions of molten rock spewing out of a nearby fissure - Fissure 8 - were burning through anything in its path at a rate of 600 yards per hour.

However, the Pixel 3 XL could come with an iPhone X-like notched display, a widely adopted trend among Android manufacturers. The Pixel 3 XL will likely include two camera lenses on the front of the device that are housed in the notch area.
"There are people that find this exciting and adventure, the lava, but a lot of people that are more conservative and that's particularly true in the Japan market", Fried said. Vog is a haze created when sulfur dioxide gas and other volcanic pollutants mix with moisture and dust.
The risky fibers - named after Hawaiian fire and volcano goddess Pele - are produced when lava splatter droplets cools rapidly in the air and can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.
Besides the lava, there's also the danger of "vog", or volcanic smog. The ocean entries that were previously created by lava flows from fissure 22 are now inactive, but a new flow fed from the central part of the fissure system is slowly making its way just west of the previous flow channels and might reach the ocean near Mackenzie State park.
The road they're working to uncover is known as Chain of Craters-Kalapana Road, and has been covered by lava for 41 years out of the 53 years it has existed, the release said.
There are no new evacuation orders as a result of the compromised air quality, just the ongoing warning to people with respiratory issues to stay indoors.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that vigorous lava eruptions continue in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.
It could be a while before power returns.
