Leading the fourth International Yoga Day celebrations here in Uttarakhand, Modi said that the world has embraced yoga and glimpses of this can be seen in the manner in which the International Day of Yoga is marked every year, IANS said.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, "Yoga has emerged as the biggest unifying force in the world".
"The world has embraced yoga and proof of this can been seen in how the International Yoga Day has been marked", the Prime Minister said, adding that "Yoga is lovely because it is ancient yet modern, constant yet evolving".
Agastya Muni, one of the Satyas, has worked in India to make yoga a part of life.
While calling the Modi's proposal at the United Nations for holding an International Yoga Day "historic", Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said yoga not only leads to wellness but also happiness.
"Yoga has now become a vital holistic fitness regime for all", said Jaya Raman, a corporate executive base in Gurgaon. "It has become an occasion of initiation for millions inspired by the spirit of yoga, they commit themselves to its pursuit", he said.

Wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of white pants, Mr Modi performed breathing exercises and asanas along with thousands of other yoga enthusiasts who performed the same on saffron yoga mats.
Underscoring the global impact of yoga, Modi said interest in the exercise form is growing rapidly in western countries. People of all ages and nationalities performed yoga in unison.
Prime Minister said that we should not hesitate to honour our own legacy and heritage if we want the rest of the world to respect us.
Emphasising that yoga is not limited to exercises and postures, he said the ancient Indian practice involves a deep search into the body mind and spirit and "leads to greater understanding of oneself, which leads further to social discipline and in turn to ethics and enduring values of life".
A number of yoga-related events were also organised across the world to mark the event. People all across the city participated in it and made it a grand event.
Modi is keen on portraying his physical prowess, last week posting on Twitter his morning yoga routine involving plodding around a tree and flexing over a boulder.
