People can check their names through both offline and online methods at 2,500 NRC Seva Kendras (service centres) set up different parts of the state. More than 70 people died and a bunch of pleas reached the Supreme Court thereafter.

According to the census, Assam's population rose by 50% between 1970 and 1979, a rise that has mainly come from the Bengali-speaking Muslim population across the border. It was agreed that all foreigners who had entered Assam between 1951 and 1961 would be given full citizenship.
