Parts of her conversation with Kelly were played on the air when she appeared on NBC's Meet the Press to promote her new book, Unhinged, which will be released this week.
SiriusXM Progress host Mark Thompson noted that in 2016 she denied a tape of President Donald Trump using the N-word.
Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said on ABC's "This Week" program that Manigault-Newman has undercut her credibility by previously giving glowing endorsements of Trump, and contradicting herself over whether she was sacked or resigned. But Sunday she tells Chuck Todd that, after the book closed, she was able to hear it personally.
"I think it's important to understand that if we can make this a friendly departure we can all be, you know, you can look at your time here in the White House as a year of service to the nation, and then you can go on without any type of difficulty in the future relative to your reputation", Kelly said on the tape. "They were not offering a real job", she said.
Later Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the "very idea a staff member would sneak a recording device into the White House Situation Room, shows a blatant disregard for our national security".
"They continue to deceive this nation by how mentally declined he is", she said, "how hard it is for him to process complex information. So yes, I had to protect myself and I have no regret about it".
Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer told ABC News her claims are "completely fictional".
I am a journalist and I believe taping without both people's consent is not ethical.
Fortnite for Android goes "off market"
Fortnite is a mega-popular, fight-the-demons, post-apocalyptic video game, and it's about to come out on Android. Google's cut is 30% of all user purchases made on the Play Store, same as Apple's for the App Store.
Newman pushed back further against the framing of her dismissal by calling on the White House to release her personnel file to clear up what exactly happened.
Many within the White House fear Manigault Newman will release their private conversations. "I had a blind spot where it came to Donald Trump". I wanted to see the best in him.
White House aides are exploring what punishment she could face for the purported recording in the Situation Room and in the building, according to a senior administration official. It is the same amount that a few others who have departed the White House under inauspicious circumstances are receiving.
He added that Manigault Newman had top secret clearance at a minimum, and she may have broken the law by recording her conversation in the Situation Room - what's supposed to be the most secure place in the White House.

Former White House lawyers and government ethics experts have said the agreements raised serious legal questions and reflected Trump's refusal to submit to the norms of public disclosure or respect free speech rights.
She said in a statement that she feels "pity for Omarosa as she embarrasses herself by creating salacious lies and distortions just to try to be relevant and enrich herself by selling books at the expense of the truth".
