Cuomo made news early in the debate, vowing to serve a full four-year term should he win in November.
'Can you stop interrupting?' Cuomo asked at one point.
Cuomo responded to Nixon saying "the governor of NY is not a job about politics, it's not about advocacy".
He described Mr Trump, a Republican, as "the largest threat" faced by New Yorkers, a greater danger than climate change, extreme weather or terrorism, and pointedly criticised Mr Trump for his anti-immigration rhetoric and desire to limit access to abortion.
"Today, you have to fight Donald Trump, who is the main risk to the state of New York", Cuomo said.
Whoever wins the primary in two weeks is nearly assured of being governor because NY is a Democratic stronghold.
Nixon scoffed at Cuomo's depiction of himself as a fierce opponent of the president, who like the two candidates is a New York City native.

Reports suggest that North Korea will be hosting a two-day global blockchain conference in its capital Pyongyang later this year. In the past week, while they were talking, the U.S. slapped tariffs on a further US$16 billion in Chinese imports.
"Yeah, as soon as you do", Cuomo said.
He is just like President Donald Trump.
Critics have accused Trump of being insufficiently critical of Putin.
Perhaps mindful of Richard Nixon's disastrous sheen in his 1960 television debate with John F Kennedy, not to mention Tony Blair's saturated turn at the Labour conference in 2000, the governor is known to prefer far cooler conditions...
Cuomo, who has been even more dismissive of Nixon than he was of Teachout, portrayed his opponent as a head-in-the-clouds socialist. "And when you look at Cuomo's record specifically, there are too many uncomfortable similarities between him and Trump".
"Excuse me, can you stop interrupting?" At one point, he recalled his late father, three-term New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, telling him how "smart people" can do "stupid things".
Nixon also hit Cuomo on his experience, saying "I'm not an Albany insider like Governor Cuomo, but I think that experience doesn't mean that much if you're not actually good at governing".
"You are a corporation", Cuomo said. Pressed about the conviction earlier this year of Joseph Percoco, one of Cuomo's top aides, on three charges related to a bribery conspiracy, the governor called it a "painful situation" and "personally hard situation for his family". The current governor has a long record of government service and had raised almost 50 times more money than Nixon, according to financial disclosures filed last month. He returned to the attack several times, while Nixon explained that she would be a more reliable progressive, and would try to turn NY into a model for that kind of governance instead of one where moderate Democrats cut deals with Republicans. Corporate, establishment Democrats like Governor Cuomo are just saying over and over again, 'I'll oppose Trump, ' without providing any real substance.
