So guess we can say Bill might be a Grande Stan.
Sharpton couldn't help but take a swipe at President Trump for referring to Franklin as someone who "used to work for me" the day she died from pancreatic cancer on August 16. Clinton reminisced about how he and Hillary were early fans of Aretha's, and how they maintained a friendship until her death earlier this month.
He said he hoped to one day collaborate with her in heaven before performing As, a cut from his album Songs in the Key of Life.
"I've known Aretha nearly 60 years", Jackson said.
The sublime spectacle of Aretha Franklin's homegoing on Friday - live-streamed from Detroit, filled with the spirit and enhanced by a Twitter-wide congregation of hearty amens and occasional side-eyes - stood in sharp, if entirely coincidental, contrast to the midmorning coverage of the official ceremony at the U.S. Capitol honoring John McCain, the late senator from Arizona whose body would officially lie in state before a final memorial service scheduled for Saturday at Washington National Cathedral.
"When word went out that Ms. Franklin passed, Trump said she used to work for me".
"She gave us pride".
"I've been watching the celebration of your life from everywhere", said Robinson, addressing his lifelong friend from the stage, "and I've been doing interviews from everywhere, from all over the world".
British premier Theresa May to visit Nigeria on Wednesday
Nairobi-based The Star says Mrs May's visit comes as President Uhuru Kenyatta grapples with funding for his "big four" agenda. Her only previous trip to the continent was a visit to Tunisia in 2015 in the aftermath of the Sousse hotel terror attack.
The former president recalled being an "Aretha groupie" all his life and being thrilled to meet her backstage at her last public performance, a benefit in Harlem for Elton John's AIDS charity past year. It will be marked by a different discipline, another kind of order, taking a different path home with eulogies from former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
Clinton said, "I wonder what my friend has got on today".
Missing the Queen of Soul's funeral?
Sharpton read the letter from Obama and his wife. Her hits like "Respect", "Chain of Fools" and "Think", impacted the music industry for generations to come.
"She was born a princess, her family made her so, but it was through her talent, determination and care for others that she became a queen", said former US Attorney General Eric Holder, who was among dozens to deliver speeches. Franklin's burial site is at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit alongside her Baptist minister father C.L. Franklin.
The tribute is a nod to Franklin's funky '80s tune, "Freeway of Love, " which prominently featured the auto in the lyrics and video.
The mayor said: "When Aretha Franklin sang, it sounded like the voice of Detroit".
