While the Hurricane Watch Net (HWN http://www.hwn.org/) on September 5 formally secured operations initiated ahead of Tropical Storm Gordon, which had been forecast to become a Category 1 hurricane, the HWN is keeping close watch on Hurricane Florence, now a Category 3 storm still out in the Atlantic. The storm weakened into a depression Wednesday but remained unsafe, dumping rain, spawning possible tornadoes and kicking up heavy surf in its wake.
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers through the overnight hours.
Downpours have flooded streets in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi as the storm headed north and threatened to bring heavy rains to the Mississippi Valley and the Midwest over the next few days, the NHC said.
Gordon could drop heavy rain - generally 4 to 8 inches, but as many as 12 - from Florida's western panhandle to southern Arkansas through Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said. Winds from the storm caused at least one death in Florida when a tree fell onto a mobile home in Escambia County.
Tropical Storm Gordon sputtered Wednesday after sweeping ashore overnight, saturating the Gulf Coast but sparing the region a new round of widespread destruction.
The child's age and identity were not released.
Neighbors told the newspaper the victim was about 10 months old. Beachgoers in the area were being warned Wednesday that it's too early to return to the water; unsafe rip currents prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it's illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico. "Sometimes it starts pushing not only water across but debris, logs and things of that nature, which makes it very treacherous to get across", said Jeff Collier, mayor of Dauphin Island, Alabama.
Dominic Carlucci drove back to his home on the barrier island in his Hummer, and found no damage, just a sagging wooden fence. "We're good", he said.
No sex charges for Spacey, Seagal, Anthony Anderson
He apologized for any inappropriate conduct with Rapp but has not commented since and has stepped away from public life. Seagal is still under scrutiny for another alleged sexual assault , although the details of the accusation are unclear.
BSEE also said 266.08 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas output was shut on Wednesday in the Gulf, an increase of 34.08 mmcfd from Tuesday. Boaters and fishermen returned to marinas after having fled inland a day before.
"This is the price you pay to look at this attractive water and enjoy the coast", Pascagoula resident Richard Whitlock said as he raked leaves and branches from his yard overlooking the Gulf. Tens of thousands of customers spent part of Wednesday without electricity.
Rain was still falling but the lights were on Wednesday morning at a Waffle House restaurant in Mobile, where factory worker Jerome Richardson said he lost power at 9 p.m.as the storm passed overhead.
"I just hope I don't have to throw out everything in my refrigerator when I get home", he said. And in Kansas, where hundreds of people were rescued from flash flooding this week, the governor declared a state of emergency in several counties. Communities along the coast provided sand and bags, and many hustled to protect their properties ahead of the storm.
With Gordon diminishing, there were new tropical weather concerns: Hurricane Florence has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, on a path toward Bermuda, and lining up behind it, another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa.
The storm made landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 70 miles per hour.
"If you are less than 3 to 5 feet above sea level (in the warning area), you need to get away from that water, especially up those rivers, because that's where that water will be going", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.
