The Iowa State Women's golf coach spoke with Celia's mother, who says she stands by her choice to trust Iowa State with her daughter.
TV9 has gone through court documents from 15 court cases involving Collin Richards, the man accused of killing Iowa State University student Celia Barquin Arozamena, dating back to 2014, many of them connected to violent crimes. Police said the 22-year-old had "several stab wounds to the upper torso, head and neck" and appeared to have been attacked in what authorities believe was a random act of violence.
Collin Daniel Richards has been charged with murder in Barquin's death.
The 22-year-old engineering student had been named female athlete of the year earlier this year after winning the Big 12 women's golf championship.
As news of the tragedy was disseminated, many people and organizations began to send their tributes to the slain golfer.
Meanwhile, fans of the Iowa State football team have all been asked to wear yellow for Saturday's games in Ames against Akron, in honour of Barquin.
Baker Mayfield's first National Football League pass
Mayfield caught a pass from Landry on a variant of the Eagles' famous "Philly Special" for a two-point conversion to tie it at 14. The Jets (1-2) grabbed a 14-0 lead on a pair of touchdowns by former Browns running back Isaiah Crowell.
The golf course Celia was at was one the Spain native had played at countless times before.
Huff said police don't know of any relationship connecting the suspect and the victim.
A knife and clothes covered in blood were also recovered, and Richards was charged with first-degree murder, the spokesman added. She also said she might be open to considering a plan to require Iowa employers to use the government's E-Verify system to check their workers' eligibility to be in the USA, although it's not clear whether that would have prevented the farm from hiring Rivera.
Swedish golfing great Annika Sorenstam called the murder "horrendous", as she posted a picture of herself alongside Barquin after she won the 2018 European Ladies' Amateur Championship in Slovakia in July. In another, he threatened to return to a convenience store to shoot clerks who caught him shoplifting. Women's golf coach Christie Martens said Barquin was an "outstanding representative of our school".
He has an extensive criminal record, including domestic abuse and assault.
