Amritsar train accident: A tragic accident happened on the eve of Dussehra, thousands of people had gathered to watch the burning of an effigy of Ravana and a speedy train mowed hundreds of people, out of which 61 are reportedly dead.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Home Secretary of Punjab and DGP of the state regarding the train accident. Two trains arrived from the opposite direction at the same time, giving little opportunity for the people to escape, officials said.
"There was a lot of noise as firecrackers were being let off and it appears they (victims) were unable to hear the approaching train", a police official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
It turned out to be a dark Dussehra as 58 people lost their lives in less than a minute, in a most horrific and freakish train accident. "Railways is conducting immediate relief and rescue operations", Goyal tweeted from the USA, where he had gone to attend an event.
Dussehra celebrations were being held along railway tracks when the accident took place. So there are many casualties. "We are evacuating people, injured taken to the hospital", a policeman was quoted as saying.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the accident. "The incident needs to be probed as it casts serious question on administration".
"What a mindless & entirely avoidable tragedy!" He said those responsible for the tragedy must be handed exemplary punishment.
