ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - There have been many moments since the Denver Broncos convened for their first on-field practices in May, when Demaryius Thomas could be seen talking to rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton about some of the finer points of the work to be done as an National Football League wide receiver.
After watching the Oakland Raiders get a first-round pick for Amari Cooper, much of Broncos Country is outraged that Thomas fetched only a fourth-round pick, but that's the unfortunate diminished value with a player who is going to cost a team almost $20 million over the next two years.
He has 36 catches for 402 yards and three touchdowns in eight games this season. It is expected that Sutton will receive more playing time in Thomas's absence. First, I'm sure once they're done giving Thomas his physical today, the Texans coaches will sit him down and supplement the scouting report with whatever intel he can provide.
Thomas was the longest-tenured Broncos player after being drafted by the team in 2010.

The team then stood at the back of the shrine and looked out on the hundreds of flowers, cards and messages laid on the floor. Players such as Jamie Vardy and Kasper Schmeichel could be seen comforting Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha .
For Thomas, a nine-year run with the Broncos has come to an unceremonious close.
Thomas was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2012-14 and 2016. According to OverTheCap, Houston is slated to have more than $91 million in projected cap space, so taking on Thomas is nothing to worry about. "We thought this would give Courtland a chance to get out there and play more and be a bigger part of it because we think he's ready to go".
But the Texans found a willing trade partner in Denver. The rookie had a season-high 78 yards on three catches in the loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. That can't be great for team morale, and for what it's worth, the betting line on the game has moved from Broncos -2.5 to a pick 'em.
