A small community in the USA state of Wisconsin is in mourning after three Girl Scouts and an adult volunteer were killed in a hit-and-run while picking up litter along a rural road on Saturday.
Sokup says the 21-year-old driver, Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls, sped off but later surrendered and will be charged with four counts of homicide. He will be charged with four counts of homicide, Sokup said.
On Sunday, hundreds of community members gathered outside Halmstad Elementary School in Chippewa Falls.
The children had been litter picking in a ditch near Lake Hallie, a town about 95 miles east of Minneapolis when the truck crossed over a lane and into the ditch, hitting the group.
Authorities say a 21-year-old driver was intoxicated when he struck and killed three Girl Scouts and a parent and critically injured a fourth girl along a rural Wisconsin road.
All members of the group - seven children and five adults - "were in the ditch, not on the pavement or gravel shoulder at the time of the crash" and were "wearing green highly visible safety vests", police said.
Eliopoulos says it's a "difficult time for our students, families and staff", and that the district will provide support "for as long as needed".
A girl scout troop was picking up trash on CTH P near STH 29 when a black Ford F150 left the roadway and struck multiple persons in the ditch. Two other scouts were injured.

Two of them and the adult died at the scene, while the third girl died in hospital.
Troop 3055's regional council, the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, expressed its condolences on Facebook and said a vigil will be held Sunday evening. The other was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports the driver of the pickup that hit the group fled the scene but is now in police custody.
The Lake Hallie Police Department extends it's deepest sympathies to the families involved.
Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District spokeswoman Michelle Golden said the district was "deeply saddened by this tragedy" and "hearts and prayers are with the girls and their families", WEAU reported.

Sergeant Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police said the stretch of road had no blind spots, with the crash occurring just before an incline in the road.
Officials say the crash happened at 11:41AM on County P at the 29 overpass near Weber Field. Emergency helicopters were also flown in to assist.
