The company also said it would close three plants outside North America by the end of next year.
"General Motors decision today to stop production at the Lordstown, Ohio, and Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plants will idle thousands of workers, and will not go unchallenged by the UAW", Terry Dittes, UAW Vice President in charge of negotiations with GM, said.
On Monday, GM officials announced their decision to lay off 14,000 factory and white-collar workers in North America.
But the single largest batch of job cuts by a USA automaker in 17 years wasn't greeted as grim news by shareholders.
But its outlook is bleak after GM announced production of the Chevy Cruze would stop in March, halting work at the assembly plant that already had lost two shifts and 3,000 union jobs since the beginning of previous year. The company, calling the move a response to "changing market conditions", said it would get rid of more than 6,000 production jobs and another 8,000 salaried positions.
The shift by United States consumer preferences have been away from passenger cars to larger, more comfortable SUVs and pick-up trucks has been swift and severe, leaving automakers scrambling to readjust.
Executives at PMX say they believe the impact from GM's announcement will be minimal.
GM has confirmed to the Canadian government it will close the Oshawa plant outside of Toronto, leading to a walk out by workers, and a lot of ill-feeling due to aid previously given to GM to keep the plant open and the company afloat.

Trump separately told The Wall Street Journal on Monday that General Motors Co should stop making cars in China and make them in the United States instead.
Closing the factories, eliminating workers and discontinuing certain vehicles is expected to save approximately $6 billion.
In a statement, Governor John Kasich said the news was "frustrating" but said he would work with GM to try to preserve the plant.
Many of those who will lose jobs are now working on conventional cars with internal combustion engines.
In a press release, GM said it will cut 15 percent of its salaried workers and new products will be brought to fewer plants next year. GM wouldn't disclose how many employees have accepted the buyout.
But as long as the tariffs remain in place, GM and other American automakers have little incentive to expand production and every incentive to find new supply chains and cost-cutting strategies to avoid the import taxes. The company said those moves, along with another at a Canada-based factory, are aimed at cutting costs.
The announcement was made to employees at a Monday morning meeting.
