Custom Home Builder Grey Lundberg Guilty Of Stealing Tax Money

August 13th 2010 No Comment

Indeed, nobody can get away with cheating the law. Custom home builder Grey Lundberg didn’t get away with it.

The 48-year old home builder and former owner of CMI homes was charged last March with 13 counts of first-degree sales taxes theft. On Wednesday, Lundberg – whose homes were once featured in Street of Dreams events – pleaded guilty, admitting to pocketing the $629,000 sales tax collected on construction work.

The state Revenue Department said that from its inception in July 2006 through December 2007, CMI Homes didn’t file state tax returns. Only when the department started auditing the company did Lundberg start doing so. Even then, states the department further, he did not remit any collected sales tax.

Superior Court Judge Ronald Kessler has given Grey Lundberg a deadline: February 16. The deadline marks the date when the accused home builder is supposed to repay the tax money he did not remit. When the deadline passes, only then shall the court decide as whether to sentence the accused or give him more time to acquire money to pay the state.

Cindi Holmstrom, Revenue Director, was quoted as saying, “Nobody should be able to cheat the public and undercut honest businesses by pocketing the sales tax they collect from customers. People expect the tax they pay to return to them in the form of state and local services. This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that all taxpayers pay their fair share.”
