Last year, foreign investment in U.S. real estate more than doubled, and international investors show no sign of slowing down when it comes to taking advantage of the widely-predicted U.S. commercial real estate market recovery[1]. According to Jones Lang LaSalle, foreign investment in U.S. real estate doubled last year to $13.37 billion, and that trend is expected to continue at least through 2011. “As foreign investors examine the U.S. real estate market as an investment opportunity, they see a marketplace that has a strong upside,” explained Antonio Zúñiga, a principal at Sterling Income Management. Zúñiga added that with supply and rental levels improving and the value of the U.S. dollar being so advantageous for foreign investors right now, “we expect our attractive investments to move quickly.”

While these foreign investments may help restore the commercial real estate market, some economists are concerned that too much of the United States is going to be owned by other countries. For example, some citizens in Toledo, Ohio have expressed concern over one Chinese company’s intent to purchase a large amount of waterfront land, even though the city needs to sell that property and Toledo’s mayor, Mike Bell, actually took a nine-day trip to China to help solidify the deal[2]. Do you think that there is such a thing as too much foreign investment in the United States today? Can we afford to turn it away?

One Response to “Foreign Investors Double Down on Anticipated U.S. Commercial Recovery”

  1. Casey Cassetta Says:

    YES,

There is too much foreign buying of US properties. Why can’t the powers to be make doing business with US businessmen easier & more affordable, to keep our shores with good ole American investments. Wake up America, China owns us.
