A New York daily has reported last week that 17-year NFL veteran Mark Brunell could be joining the roster of the New York Jets as a support quarterback for team starter Mark Sanchez.

Reports said that the 39-year-old Brunell started visiting the Jets training camp in April and with the team believing that the veteran quarterback could provide a boost by mentoring Sanchez, he was invited to join the Jets’ workout in Florham Park on Wednesday.

However, a survey conducted by the Daily News during the NFL’s season break showed that a great majority of the queried players were sold to the notion that Kellen Clemens would do a better job backing up Sanchez when the 2010 regular season opens up.

One of the players flatly declared that Brunell would be too old to play competitive football citing that the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback is set to turn 40 in September.

Still, Brunell managed to squeeze considerable number of games for the past three seasons but could only chalk up a measly stats of one start and 30 pass attempts.

The aging quarterback, however, edged out Clemens in the starting department during the past four years when he collected a total of ten starts against Clemens’ nine.

A Jets player added that he was not even aware that Brunell was still actively playing in the league until the New York franchise was pitted against the Saints last year, when the player suited up as backup for the Saints’ starter.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback has been switching teams lately and equally dealing with worsening financial woes, the latest of which was his summer application for bankruptcy.

Reports said that following series of mishandled real estate investments, the once shining football star ended up being plagued by debts of up to $24.7 million.

The only good thing going for Brunell for now was the Jets seeming infatuation with the veteran quarterback that started early this year.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan described Brunell as a class act during a May interview, from which he also revealed that Brunell allowed some indications that coaching was becoming an option.

Ryan said that a slot may open up for Brunell as he added that the player could still be an asset on the Jets motivating department where “he would have been a good mentor to our guys.”

Yet that would not be realized until the ‘Final Eight’ rule would have been lifted while Clemens probable stint with the Jets still hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile, another Jets player praised Clemens for his good showings earlier this year as he stressed that the team could win more games with the player on their roster instead of Brunell.
