A policeman’s life is always in danger. And a raid in an apartment can prove very dangerous indeed; just like what happened with a South Jordan policeman last Thursday.
Joint Criminal Apprehension Team’s 29-year old police officer Stevan Gerber was shot in the leg during a raid at a South Salt Lake City apartment. The shooting happened at around one in the morning, outside an apartment at 3046 South and 300 East.
Gerber and the rest of the police on the scene were serving a warrant for 29-year old Troy Cabibi. Cabibi violated his parole by the JCAT and the team who raided his place knew he is a dangerous person. At 17, Cabibi’s name was already attached to a gang and 64 arrests; he also once shot a fire into a crowd and killed a man in 1998.
Chief Deputy Jim Thompson shares, “Well they forcibly made entry, they knew the suspect was in there and as soon as the door was open a shot rang out from inside shooting out at the officers who were outside.”
It is yet unknown who fired the shot that injured Gerber but investigators say that the entry team did not fire back. They will further look at forensic evidence to determine exactly who shot Gerber on the leg.
Bradley James Olmos, 18 years of age, was also arrested. A woman, carrying an 18-month old baby, found inside the house was also brought in for questioning. She was released later on.
Gerber is currently at the Intermountain Medical Center. He has survived a 6-hour surgery aimed at repairing a fractured femur. The doctors said the injury was more dangerous than they initially predicted.
Both Cabibi and Olmos are now charged with attempted murder. Federal charges can also be filed against them as JCAT member are considered deputized federal agents.
